Dolls

My wife, Andrea, and I worked together for several years making portrait and character dolls.  We made the clay models, plaster molds, fired the porcelain, assembled them and made the clothes/costumes for them.  It was fun.  (From the three small children: "Now Dad's making dolls!")

This is one of four pieces that make up the Albert's Dream series that Andrea and I made for a special ceramic exhibit that The State University of New York held in the summer of 1986.  The intent of the series was to pursue the concept of "doll" to see how  or at what point it could become sculpture.  This piece is a portrait of Andrea's great grandmother with reference to ancestral roots.  The doll portion is about 18" high with the canvas about 3 ft. high mounted on a steel pipe with a total height of about 8 feet. With dramatic lighting in the exhibit it was impressive.
